Joe is waiting, like he said he would be. Leaning against the flimsy siding, rubbing his toe in the dirt. Boots the size of small boats. High wader pants and shirt that’s bordering on crop top.

“Did you get what you wanted out of him?”

Marion plods down the steps. “Yeah, I guess.”

“Can I ask what that was?”

“You can ask.”

Joe laughs big and all-American. “I guess I had that coming.”

“It’s no big thing,” Marion says. “I just wanted to know why he did it.”

The guard tilts his face up toward the sky. They stand for a time, both silent and still.

Sometime later Joe says, “Guys like that, they do it for the attention. Otherwise how will the world see them?”

Marion presses his shoe into the ground. Lifts the sole and finds it lightly dusted, but otherwise undefiled. The dirt isn’t so lucky, with its new wavy stripes.

“That’s not it,” he says.

“So what is it?”

Another stretch of silence. Then: “Kemp said you’re going to kill him.”

“We don’t do executions. It’s un-American.”

“It wasn’t always. Anyway, Bo Kemp believes what he believes.”

“And you buy it?”

“Who am I to stand between a man and his beliefs?”

“You’re an interesting man, Mr. Nelson—maybe even a good one.”

Good. Maybe once. But now? He’s one man doing what he can for his family, which turns out to be fuck all. Marion smiles, but there’s no joy in it. “We’re all the same shit, Joe. Don’t you forget it.”
